Dent escaped from the hospital and descended into madness. As Two-Face, his trademark was crimes involving the number two. His obsession even shows in his clothes, which are usually composed of two halves made out of very different materials.

At all times, he carries a double-sided coin with one side defaced, which he constantly flips to make any choices. Two-Face flips the coin at critical junctures: The scarred side would usually result in a crime, but the clean side would allow Two-Face to do the right thing, such as returning his loot or refraining from a murder.

This, however, proved too much for the good side of his personality, and he began attempting to visit Gilda, claiming he had regained his face through plastic surgery.

Gilda, however, soon saw through the fabrication, and this unhinged Dent even more. Finally, he was apprehended by Batman, with the help of his partner, Robin.

Shortly after, a certain Dr. Ekhart performed plastic surgery on Dent's face, seemingly repairing it for good.

While the facial reconstruction managed to partially heal Two-Face's fractured mind, Ekhart's assistant, Mr. Wilkins, began to place suspicion on Harvey Dent once more by committing crimes disguised as Two-Face.

Batman, however, saw through the disguise and helped Two-Face clear his name. For two years, Dent led a normal life until actor Paul Sloane , scarred in the same manner as Dent had once been, was driven mad, beginning to think he was really Dent as Two-Face.

Batman arrested Sloane for several attempted robberies and had his face restored, in the same manner Harvey Dent's had once been.

Dent, however, was caught in an explosion a few years later, which undid the plastic surgery and scarred his face once again. Maddened again, the revived Two-Face hired the Crime Doctor to kidnap Paul Sloane and scar the actor's face again, to mirror the transformation that had occurred in Dent.

Although restored as Two-Face's twin, Sloane proved more fortunate, and had his face repaired again after being rescued by Batman. Dent, meanwhile, was brought to justice again and placed behind bars, with his renewed mental and physical scarring seemingly more permanent this time.

In the aftermath of the earthquake that left Gotham City in shambles during Cataclysm, Two-Face escaped custody and kidnapped Commissioner Gordon to put him on trial for his actions during No Man's Land, with Two-Face as both judge and prosecutor.

Gordon played upon Two-Face's split psyche to demand Harvey Dent as his defense attorney. Dent cross-examined Two-Face and won an acquittal of Gordon.

Montoya was able to reach the Dent persona in Two-Face, and was kind to him. He fell in love with her, though the romance was one-sided.

After the earthquake that ravaged Gotham, Two-Face outed her as a lesbian and framed her for murder, hoping that if he took everything from her she would be left with no choice but to be with him.

Montoya was furious, and the two fought for control of his gun until Batman intervened, putting Two-Face back in Arkham Asylum. A short time later, Two-Face met the brilliant surgeon, Dr.

Thomas Elliot. Although Elliot specialized in neurosurgery, he was competent enough to repair Dent's face via plastic surgery. Dent's sanity was restored, and the menacing "Two-Face" persona seemed to be gone forever.

Thomas Elliot was also the villain known as Hush, and he had hoped to manipulate Dent into acting as one of his many pawns in a campaign against Batman.

With renewed sanity, Dent stood by the side of law and order and betrayed Hush, catching him in enough time to save Batman's life, and shooting him into the Gotham river.

Having regained his trust, Dent was trained and conditioned by Batman to act as Gotham's primary vigilante protector when he, Robin and Nightwing all took a one-year hiatus to train during the Lost Year.

When confronted on the issues by Batman, in his anger at being distrusted, the Two-Face persona resurfaced, and talked Dent into scarring his face and returning to his life of crime.

Harvey Dent has returned to his Two-Face identity and committing crimes. In Justice League of America 13 Vol. After the Injustice League was captured by Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad , Two-Face was exiled to a distant planet with most of the other villains.

Upon escaping with his life, Dent returned to Gotham City to reestablish himself. Two-Face soon carved out a piece of Gotham's local mobs for his own, sharing an underworld empire with The Penguin.

He appears in Battle for the Cowl: The Underground, which shows the effects of Batman's death on his enemies.

A returning Black Mask , however, soon topples Two-Face's criminal empire, claiming it for his own. Dent is forced into hiding, but ponders the possible death of the original Batman when Batman seemingly reappears, being caught on security footage to let Gotham City know that the Dark Knight lives on.

Two-Face studies recent video tapes of Batman and notices that he is smiling. He deduces that there is a new person under the cowl, which is in reality Dick Grayson.

Two-Face then searches for a person with teleporting abilities he can hire who can take him to the Batcave. Two-Face selects three candidates, and when he locates the one who is willing to hire himself out to him, murders the other two.

Two-Face is teleported into the original Batcave, although his intrusion is soon discovered by Alfred Pennyworth.

When the new Batman investigates the cave, he is ambushed by Two-Face. The hero discovers that the giant penny in the Batcave is covered with deep scratches across the surface.

Two-Face then shoots Dick with several high-powered darts that pierce his inferior costume, since Grayson had sacrificed the body armor of the Batsuit for better mobility.

In a hallucination, the poisoned Dick is affected by the drugged darts and sees Dent in a twisted, red and black version of Batman's original costume.

Two-Face beats Dick brutally, and Grayson realizes that the villain's darts had been coated with the Scarecrow 's fear toxins. Two-Face continues to beat the fallen crime-fighter angrily, shouting that he could never replace the original Batman.

He also reveals that he had been trying to infiltrate the famed Batcave for years, but had no success until that day, because the original Batman would never leave himself open to attack.

Alfred Pennyworth saves Dick by giving him an antidote for the toxin, careful to stay in the shadows so as not to be recognized by Two-Face.

Dick recovers and slips into the inner depths of the cave, disappearing from Two-Face's view. Dent starts to panic and starts firing his gun at every shadow, and Dick then retaliates by administering a savage beating.

Defeated, Two-Face admits he really believes that Dick is the original Batman, but has changed in major ways. Two-Face has been at odds with Gotham's latest district attorney, Kate Spencer , also known as the vigilante Manhunter.

However, his plans have garnered the attention of the FBI. After he discovers a mole in his midst, he flees only to be stabbed by his own henchmen.

Two-Face is left for dead, his body dumped off a bridge. Sometime later, two fishermen in the middle of a lake reel in Two-Face's water-logged body.

Two-Face appeared very briefly in an attempted prison break in The Court of Owls storyline. Batman comments on how some people had compared Gotham to the villain while stopping the riot.

He also made an appearance in the Knight Terrors storyline. In this he was given a variant of the drug venom by the White Rabbit.

This caused him to become much stronger and have no fear causing him to fight with Batman once again in an Arkham riot.

Once an upstanding Gotham City District Attorney , Harvey Dent is hideously scarred on the left side of his face after mob boss Sal Maroni throws acidic chemicals at him during a court trial.

He subsequently goes insane and adopts the "Two-Face" persona, becoming a criminal obsessed with the number two, the concept of duality and the conflict between good and evil.

In later years , writers have portrayed Two-Face's obsession with chance and fate as the result of schizophrenia , bipolar disorder , and dissociative identity disorder.

He obsessively makes all important decisions by flipping his former lucky charm, a two-headed coin which was damaged on one side by the acid as well.

The modern version is established as having once been a personal friend and ally of James Gordon and Batman. The character has been featured in various media adaptations, such as feature films , television series and video games.

The character only made three appearances in the s, and appeared twice in the s not counting the impostors mentioned below.

Some inspiration was also derived from the Pulp magazine character the Black Bat , whose origin story included having acid splashed on his face.

He had clear ties to both Batman and Commissioner Gordon , making him an unsettling and personal foe for both men. A mobster throws acid in his face during a trial, scarring half his face.

Driven insane by his reflection, he renames himself Two-Face and goes on a crime spree, deciding with a flip of his lucky coin whether to break the law or perform acts of charity.

The Post- Crisis version of Harvey Dent is depicted as having had an unhappy childhood; growing under his mentally ill father, who beats him regularly, often deciding whether or not to brutalize his son based on a flip of his lucky coin.

The abuse instills in Dent his lifelong struggle with free will and his eventual inability to make choices on his own, relying on the coin to make all of his decisions.

Dent is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia at a young age, but manages to hide his illnesses and, thanks to an unyielding work ethic, rises up through the ranks of Gotham City's district attorney's office until, at age 26, he becomes the youngest DA in the city's history.

Gordon even suspected that Dent could be Batman but discarded this suspicion when he realized that he lacked the financial resources of Batman.

Mob boss Carmine Falcone bribes corrupt Assistant District Attorney Vernon Fields to provide his lieutenant Sal Maroni , whom Dent is trying for murder, with sulfuric acid ; Maroni throws the acid in Dent's face during a cross-examination , horribly scarring the left side of Dent's face.

Dent escapes from the hospital and reinvents himself as the gangster Two-Face. He scars one side of his father's coin, and uses it to decide whether to commit a crime.

Two-Face gathers Gotham's criminals to assist in the destruction of the city's crime lords. After a climactic struggle in the Batcave , Two-Face is betrayed by the Joker , who shoots at Dent, causing him to fall into a chasm, presumably to his death.

Batman admits in the aftermath that, even if Two-Face has survived, Harvey is gone forever. During a much later period, Two-Face is revealed to have murdered the father of Batman's ward, Jason Todd.

When attempting to apprehend Two-Face, Jason briefly has the criminal at his mercy, but lets Two-Face's punishment be decided by the law.

In Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth , Arkham's doctors replace Dent's coin with a die and eventually a tarot deck; but rather than becoming self-reliant, Dent is now unable to make even the smallest of decisions—such as going to the bathroom.

Batman returns the coin, telling Two-Face to use it to decide whether to kill him. Batman leaves safely, but it is heavily implied that Two-Face, for the first time in his life, made his own decision to let Batman live.

In the No Man's Land storyline, in which Gotham is devastated by an earthquake, Two-Face claims a portion of the ruined city, takes up residence in Gotham City Hall, and forms a temporary alliance with Gordon to share certain territory.

His empire is brought down by Bane employed by Lex Luthor , who destroys Two-Face's gang during his destruction of the city's Hall of Records.

Two-Face kidnaps Gordon and puts him on trial for his activities after Gotham City is declared a "No Man's Land", with Two-Face as both judge and prosecutor for Gordon's illegal alliance with him; but Gordon plays upon Two-Face's split psyche to demand Harvey Dent as his defense attorney.

Dent cross-examines Two-Face and wins an acquittal for Gordon, determining that Two-Face has effectively blackmailed Gordon by implying that he had committed murders to aid the Commissioner.

Montoya reaches the Dent persona in Two-Face and is kind to him. He falls in love with her, though the romance is one-sided.

She is furious, and the two fight for control of his gun until Batman intervenes, putting Two-Face back in Arkham. In the Batman: Two-Face - Crime and Punishment one-shot comic book, Two-Face captures his own father, planning to humiliate and kill him on live television for the years of abuse that he suffered.

This story reveals that, despite his apparent hatred for his father, Dent still supports him, paying for an expensive home rather than allowing him to live in a slum.

Dent proves Two-Face wrong, choosing to jump off a building and commit suicide just to put a stop to his alter ego 's crime spree.

Two-Face is surprised when the coin flip comes up scarred, but abides by the decision and jumps. Batman catches him, but the shock of the fall seems to at least temporarily destroy the Two-Face aspect of his psyche.

She later marries Paul Janus a reference to the Roman god of doors , who had two faces. Two-Face attempts to frame Janus as a criminal by kidnapping him and replacing him with a stand-in, whom Two-Face "disfigures" with makeup.

Batman eventually catches Two-Face, and Gilda and Janus reunite. Years later, Gilda gives birth to twins, prompting Two-Face to escape once more and take the twins hostage, as he erroneously believes them to be conceived by Janus using an experimental fertility drug.

The end of the book reveals that Two-Face is the twins' natural father. In the Batman: Hush storyline, his face is repaired by plastic surgery , and only the Harvey Dent persona exists.

He takes the law into his own hands twice: once by using his ability to manipulate the legal system to free the Joker, and then again by shooting the serial killer Hush.

He manipulates the courts into setting him free, as Gotham's prosecutors would not attempt to charge him without a body.

He is reluctant to take the job, but Batman assures him that it would serve as atonement for his past crimes. After a month of training, they fight the Firebug and Mr.

Freeze , before Batman leaves for a year. Dent enjoys his new role, but his methods are seemingly more extreme and less refined than Batman's.

Upon Batman's return, Dent begins to feel unnecessary and unappreciated, which prompts the return of the "Two-Face" persona seen and heard by Dent through hallucinations.

In Face the Face , his frustration is compounded by a series of mysterious murders that seem to have been committed by Two-Face; the villains the KGBeast , the Magpie , the Ventriloquist and Scarface , and Orca are all shot twice in the head with a double-barreled pistol.

When Batman confronts Dent about these deaths, asking him to confirm that he was not responsible, Dent refuses to give a definite answer.

He then detonates a bomb in his apartment and leaves Batman dazed as he flees. Despite escaping the explosion physically unscathed, Dent suffers a crisis of conscience and a mental battle with his "Two-Face" personality.

Although Batman later uncovers evidence that exonerates Dent for the murders, establishing that he was framed as revenge for his efforts against new crime boss Warren White, a.

Prompted by resentment and a paranoid reaction to Batman's questioning, Dent scars half his face with nitric acid and a scalpel, becoming Two-Face once again.

Batman subsequently confronts White, while acknowledging that he cannot attack White, as there is no explicit evidence supporting Batman's deductions, vowing to inform Two-Face of White's actions when they next face each other.

On the cover of Justice League of America vol. He can be seen in Salvation Run. He appears in Battle for the Cowl: The Underground , which shows the effects of Batman's death on his enemies.

When the new Batman investigates the cave, Two-Face ambushes him with tranquilizer darts, and in a hallucination he sees Dent in a red and black Two-Face themed Batman costume.

In this new timeline, Two Face's origin is revised significantly. Harvey Dent is a successful defense attorney whose clientele includes twin sisters from the McKillen crime family, Shannon and Erin.

The sisters coerce Dent to become their family's legal retainer for life. They then place a contract on James Gordon and his entire family, despite Dent's protestations.

The Gordons survive the attempt on their lives, but Dent, trapped by attorney-client confidentiality, is unable to dissuade the McKillens from continuing their lethal vendetta.

The violent attempt on the Gordons' lives prompts Bruce Wayne to use his resources to initiate and fund Dent's campaign for district attorney.

Dent becomes D. After Shannon commits suicide, Erin escapes by switching places with her sister's corpse. Blaming Dent for her sister's death, Erin breaks into Dent's house, kills Gilda in front of him, and pours acid on his face, transforming him into Two-Face.

Several years later, Erin McKillen returns to Gotham City to kill Two-Face, and thus reassert her control of her family's criminal operations.

Her return sparks a climactic battle between her, Two-Face, and Batman. Two-Face scars McKillen with the same acid she used on him, but Batman stops him from killing her.

Batman and Two-Face continue battling, with Batman trying to convince his foe to end his vendetta. Two-Face then calls Batman, "Bruce", revealing that he knows Batman's secret identity.

Two-Face reveals that he struggled internally for quite some time over whether to kill his former friend, but decided not to because it would have violated his sense of justice.

He disappears after the battle and Batman is unable to track him. Several panels of Batman and Robin 28 imply that Two-Face commits suicide by shooting himself in the head.

They defeat KGBeast, but are badly injured. Batman nurses Two-Face back to health, but Two-Face suspects Batman of trying to betray him and rubs acid in his eyes.

Batman tells Two-Face that he can cure Two-Face's split personality. Two-Face does not trust Batman to help him, however, and so threatens to destroy Gotham City with poison gas unless Batman gives him the cure.

He also made an appearance in the Knight Terrors storyline. In this he was given a variant of the drug venom by the White Rabbit.

This caused him to become much stronger and have no fear causing him to fight with Batman once again in an Arkham riot.

He was close to victory until the side effects of the drug caused him to bleed from his eyes balls and collapse.

He was later interrogated by Batman about this occurrence but he was fairly uninformative to the dark knight. Later Two-Face appeared in the Death of the Family arch.

Being given a part in the Joker's twisted medieval court, set in Arkham Asylum, as a judge for Batman.

When Joker along with Dent, Penguin and Riddler, who also featured in the court, had captured Batman, Joker turned on them trapping them in a cell so he could continue with his plan alone.

Dent became furious and questioned why it must be Joker to stop the Bat. Joker the proceeded to mock his rival claiming he was only a joke in the criminal underground of Gotham, hence why he made him a Judge.

Harvey proceeded to pull a gun out on him, given to him by Joker, and threatened the clown prince. Joker then called him out suggesting to Dent that the gun was booby trapped.

Dent's will failed him and he let the gun drop down to the floor. Joker then showed Penguin and Harvey a taster of what he had in plan for the Dark Knight which drew revulsion from even these two hardened crime lord.

Two-Face is not consistently evil; every time he contemplates a crime, he flips his two-headed coin. Only if the coin came up scratched-side did Two-Face go ahead and commit the crime, never questioning the result of the toss.

This compulsion is a compromise between Dent's evil "Two-Face" personality and his former, law-abiding self. Over the years, he has been shown to rely on the coin to different degrees.

Sometimes to decide whether or not to commit a crime, sometimes to decide whether or not to do something good, like save someone. He will even go out of his way to do good deeds if the coin mandates.

Since Two-Face is hideously scarred on the left half of his face, he plays up to it with clothing that is differently styled and materialized on one side.

Two-Face also carries his obsession with the number "two" in his choice of weapon, twin. His psychotic obsession with duality and his designing crimes around the number two often leads to his downfall.

In the questionable " Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth " one-shot, the doctors at Arkham were shown to have weaned him off of the coin, and onto a die, then a pack of tarot cards.

With the die, instead of only good and evil, he is given six different options, and with the tarot, Two-Face is shown to be completely dependent, and is unable to even decide to go to the bathroom before sorting through the cards.

However, he did end up getting his coin back, and also showed a rare case of giving a different fate than the coin foretold: He set Batman free despite the coin landing bad side up.

During Countdown, when he is being deported to the "Hell Planet" along with the other villains in Salvation Run, Pied Piper and the Trickster offer to break him out of Belle Reve after defeating his escorting guards.

Two-Face flips the coin, and it comes up un-scarred, so he declines, and instead simply waits patiently in the middle of the hallway for more security guards to show up.

Over the years, various attempts have been made to repair his facial scars, but none have successfully cured his insanity long term; although he has briefly returned to his Dent persona, he has ended up simply destroying one side of his face and becoming Two-Face once again.

One special occasion can be seen in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns , where Dent goes through a surgical procedure to restore all the damaged tissue in his face, all funded by Bruce Wayne.

After the surgery, Dent is considered to be cured from his dual personality insanity, and he even appears on TV with a coin that has two clean sides.

However, as the story progresses, he gets involved in crimes again and is eventually caught by Batman and it is revealed that he thinks they did the opposite of what the surgery promised in order to "have a laugh".

Batman -- Although it was the crime lord's fault, Dent had blamed Batman for his facial scarring. He and the Batman had fought each other in over 50 issues of Batman and Detective Comics.

The Joker -- Both Two-face and the Joker are often allied just as much as they oppose each other.

This is because while both are chaotic in nature, their dispositions are entirely opposite, with the Joker's motivations centering around self-amusement and chaos, and Two-Face's often centering on anger and revenge.

Either way, these two always feud and compete on defeating Batman. Future interactions between the two shows that the only thing keeping Two-Face from killing Ivy out of revenge is a lucky coin flip.

This carried over into the animated series , in which both sides of Dent's personality expressed a desire in killing her, though "Dent" wanted to strangle her and "Big Bad Harv" wanted to hit her with a truck.

The Penguin -- The Penguin and Two-face have always been at each others throats.

Batman tells Two-Face that he can cure Two-Face's split personality. Two-Face does not trust Batman to help him, however, and so threatens to destroy Gotham City with poison gas unless Batman gives him the cure.

In the end, Batman injects Two-Face with the "cure", which turns out to be a sedative that renders Two-Face unconscious.

Batman then takes Two-Face back to Arkham. Harvey Dent had murdered a man who he could not convict in trial. Two Face says," Harvey's the good one.

He has to be. Otherwise, What am I? In the Watchmen sequel Doomsday Clock , Two-Face is among the villains who attend the underground meeting held by the Riddler.

Before his transformation into Two-Face, Harvey Dent had a successful career as Gotham's upstanding district attorney , proficient in nearly all matters pertaining to criminal law.

Two-Face has also proven to be a genius in criminal planning, and has constantly demonstrated a high-level of intelligence in plotting heists as a brilliant and respected mastermind in the criminal underworld.

In addition, Two-Face is a skilled marksman, and regularly used a variety of firearms such as pistols , shotguns , grenade launchers , Tommy guns , knives and rocket launchers during his battles with Batman.

To further improve his proficiency in the use of firearms, Two-Face hired the sharpshooting assassin Deathstroke to train him.

The Batman: Face the Face story-arc reveals that Batman, shortly before leaving Gotham for a year , trains Dent extensively in detective work and hand-to-hand combat.

This section details various members of Harvey Dent's family across various interpretations of the Batman mythos. The first impostor was Wilkins , Harvey Dent's butler, who uses makeup to suggest that Dent had suffered a relapse and disfigured his own face.

This would give Wilkins the cover to commit crimes as Two-Face. Paul Sloane becomes the second impostor of Two-Face.

This occurred when a prop boy working on the film got jealous at the fact that his girlfriend developed a crush on Sloane.

This causes the prop man to switch out the water with actual acid that was to be used for the trial scene. Sloane's mind snaps, and he begins to think that he is Dent.

Sloane recovers some of his own personality, but continues to commit crimes as Two-Face. Dent does this out of jealous bitterness and the hope that Sloane would commit crimes based on the number two, thus confusing Batman.

At the end of the story, Sloane is once again healed physically and mentally. They had originally offered Two-Face the part in the scheme, but his coin landed on the non-scarred side.

However, he is not actually disfigured, but is wearing make-up. Furthermore, his makeup is worn on the opposite side of his face to Harvey Dent or Paul Sloane, which easily enabled Batman to identify him as an impostor.

Batman defeats George Blake and clears Harvey Dent's name. Also noteworthy is a story where Batman himself is temporarily turned into Two-Face via a potion.

His plans were foiled by Damian Wayne , the fifth Robin and Batman's biological son. Unlike the original Two-Face, this version of the character was born deformed with a second face, rather than being scarred by acid or fire, and flips two coins instead of one.

He is then killed when a machine falls on him. A number of alternate universes in DC Comics publications allow writers to introduce variations on Two-Face, in which the character's origins, behavior, and morality differ from the mainstream setting.
